3rd annual talent show + house warming party

in late may we hosted our third annual talent show.  (we hosted it at our other house last year and it was at a different location the inaugural year.  here is a post about last year).
we only moved into our house three weekends before this event. and it was both way too soon to host such a huge event, and the perfect timing for such an event.  because we knew we would be hosting the talent show, followed immediately by the house warming, we got to work on the house and yard as soon as we moved in.  we hung photos, organized and put things away, mowed, weeded, painted, you name it.  even though it was a bit stressful having a deadline looming for the first few weeks of home ownership, it was also really great motivation to get work done as quickly as possible.

the children, as always, wowed the audience with thoughtful, witty and winsome acts.  we had a two family dance off, a family skit about life on the farm,  dorothy and a munchkin singing somewhere over the rainbow, some self defense lessons and demonstrations, scripture recitation and a finally by a troop of tow tapping newsies.  its such an immense pleasure to watch the kids prepare, hear their conversations about it in the weeks leading up, and getting to see bits of pieces of who each kid is based on what they chose and how they decide to share it.  i just revel in the pleasure that it is to really love and enjoy my friends' children.

immediately following the talent show (which took place in our front yard for all our new neighbors to see and wonder who in the world had moved into the house with the yellow door) we had a house warming party.  people kept arriving for hours and before the day was over we had 79 guests in our house (most of whom were, of course, children).  it was incredibly humbling to receive beautiful plants and gifts (including a 7 foot japanese cherry tree and some handmade dishcloths) as family after family arrived to wish us well in our new home.  there is nothing that will make a house feel like home like looking around and seeing 70+ of your favorite people eating, drinking, running through backyardia barefoot, swinging on the porch swing, and breaking in the kitchen.
thank you to all who attended, and to all who were not able to but have been so good to us during these first weeks and months!
