Yorktown Beach

a few weeks ago our nature group (we really dont have a title or know what to call ourselves) ventured east to a beach on the york river for the day.  it more or less closed out our summer season as we are all gearing up for homeschool to start last week or this week.

this spot has become a favorite of mine because of the following...
its about a one hour drive
there is no current
there are no waves
there's lots of shallow water
there's water deep enough for bigger kids to have a good swim
there's easy free parking
and easy access to bathrooms
and its roped off from the open water

its pretty much the perfect beach to take kids to for the day, especially with only one parent per family and lots of kids who want to play in close proximity.  truth be told i would not likely have ventured there 9 months pregnant with two kids without my incredible niece darlene, who makes everything easier and more enjoyable.  the girls (and really all the kids) were thrilled to have her there. im proud of us mamas for making the trek, doing the work to get our kids outside, together, where they can be free and enjoy nature.  and what better nature at the end of a summer than the beach?
