Topsail Island 2018; Part 1

its been a few weeks now since we came back from topsail, and i wont lie, it was a rough transition back to normal life.  we had one of the best weeks our family have ever spent together.  a few things made our trip really unique.

the first one, which was such a gift, was robert taking an entire week off work for us to get away.  he has not taken an entire week off to spend with us in years, since eden was a baby, and we were all over the moon with all the time we got to spend with him.  the girls just soaked up the lazy hours spent with him, the running around on the beach, all of it.  and i feel like i feel in love with him all over again, just getting to watch him in his father role for so many hours on end.  we get a bit lost in the day to day shuffle and i think we all needed this time to re connect and remember how much we love being together.  i am with the girls all day every day, but to have all the wide open time, with no real responsibilities or agendas, it was truly restorative.
i always love the first night at the beach.  each time we have gone with my family its been the same.  after months of anticipation, weeks of planning, and hours in a car, we finally arrive and the children (and really all of us) go a little bit crazy.  the kids rush into the waves, fully clothed, with no inhibitions at all. before long everyone is down to their underwear (the children that is) and we spend a glorious hour just watching them get reacquainted with an old friend.  its always the most special night at the beach, maybe with the exception of the last night.  we all get re-intoxicated by the salt and fresh air and wind in our hair.  the beach is truly one of the most restorative wonders.
the bigs (eden and florence) and the middles (etta mae and clive) went on to provide us with non stop action for the whole week, which i will share about later.  watching them play as pairs; the bigs out in the waves a bit further, and the middles in the tide pools and shallow surf, was unspeakably lovely.  their energy and delight were contagious and so wonderful to behold.  they were exhausting yes, but worth every bit of it.

to top off the first evening, there was a colossal storm as soon as we got back to the house.  the entire sky turned black in a matter of moments and the storm raged on all night.  we felt like it was our official welcome to the week.  and we felt very welcomed indeed.
