A Day at the Zoo

a few weeks ago, eden turned 4.  we had a huge party last year so this year i decided to do something much more low key.  we started with waffles for breakfast and a few gifts from family. eden had asked for waffles and since i usually rotate the same few things for breakfast day in and day out, i thought id humor her for the day.

next up was a trip to the zoo with a dear friend of eden's, my mom, and my niece, and a movie night for the usual suspects.  (note, the usual suspects is like 10-15 kids, so it ended up being a bit of a gathering).  the evening ended up being great, all the kids got dropped off, ate home made mac and cheese off of mismatched paper plates because no parents were present so i did not care, and then ate ice cream cake and watched pete's dragon and of course, had a dance party.  eden required that everyone come 'fancy' which in her case meant a lady bug costume...
the zoo was such a special day because eden did not know that florence and my mom were meeting us there.  so when we pulled up and eden heard florence's excited scream (and at first asked me what animal it was making that noise?) the day started on a very exciting foot.  the metro richmond zoo is really more like a petting zoo.  i mean you can't pet many animals, but it feels like a petting zoo.  we got to see nearly every animal, including a huge bengal tiger that started us down through the glass very close up, lions, tigers, bears, all sorts of monkeys, rhinos, giraffes, camels...the list goes on.  the girls ran around from one exhibit to the next, thrilled by each animal and amazed at how close they all were.  we got to go into a bird area where they fly all over you and eat out of your hands.  it was amazing
and of course we fed the giraffes.  they are my absolute favorite animal and i could never get enough of them in east africa, even after i had come across them on morning walks and had seen so many of them in the wild.  it never gets old.  they are the coolest animals.
and i think my favorite part was actually watching the girls.  they constantly had their arms around each other or holding hands, even though we were all sweating our faces off in the august heat.  they had hilarious little conversations about this and that and it felt like a real treat to just watch and listen to them.
here is my insta story from the day.  not an excellent example of my videography abilities, but hey, its captured.   another birthday in the books.
